Windsor, Calif.—Windsor High School is pleased to announce that Alec Kobre has been appointed as the new Head Varsity Basketball Coach and Head of Program.
Kobre is a Sonoma County native who attended Montgomery High School and played basketball at Santa Rosa Junior College. He was instrumental in leading the Bear Cubs to win the California Community College Athletic Association State Tournament.
Kobre also played Division I basketball at the University of the Pacific where he was an all-conference player, followed by a career overseas as a professional basketball player. He was a graduate assistant at the University of Arkansas and assistant coach at Menlo College. Prior to joining Windsor High School, Kobre served as an assistant coach at Santa Rosa Junior College.
Kobre says Windsor’s reputation as an athletic institution made the decision easy. “They had a great season this year, and I had heard great things about the athletic support and academics and felt like Windsor is a really good place to get started as head coach,” Kobre said. “They have a great support system and a great foundation to win and that was the biggest factor for me.”
He's also happy to get to stay close to home. “I’m a local guy, I grew up in Santa Rosa and I know Windsor. I know the area well and I want to stay here and I like living here”.
Current coach WHS coach Steve Kramer will be staying on as a special advisor.
“It’s awesome to have him here,” said Kobre, who played against Kramer’s teams as a high school student. “I always knew him as a great coach; having him around is a really awesome wealth of knowledge. I can bounce so much stuff off him and he has been very supportive.”
“Alec is exactly the kind of player, coach and person we want as a part of Windsor Unified School District,” said Superintendent Jeremy Decker. “I know he’s going to have a big, positive impact for our students.”
Kobre says his coaching style is about building on the strong foundations in Windsor. “I’m more of a transformational coach,” he said. “I want to build the program from top to bottom. Windsor is already in a good spot, but we have a chance to get better. I want to have relationships with the players, and I want them to come back to the community.”
“I want to build within the community, I don’t just want to be somebody who went to Windsor just because I want to win. I do want to win, but it’s more about building relationships and building a strong program overall,” he concluded with a smile.
Families wanting to meet Coach Kobre (both current families and pre-enrolled 9th grade families) are invited to an informational meeting tomorrow night, Wednesday, March 1, 2023, from 6:30 to 7:00 p.m. at the Windsor High School Library. This meeting presents a unique opportunity for parents to meet Coach Kobre and gain insight into his coaching philosophy and plans for the basketball program.
At the meeting, Coach Kobre will provide an overview of the basketball program, including details on tryout dates, team expectations, and schedule. Parents will also have the opportunity to ask questions and provide input on the future of the program.
“I’m very excited to get started with the program,” Kobre said. “We’ve got a chance to be pretty good over the next few years.”
Kobre has a lot of support from his loved ones as he takes his next steps. He and his fiancee Rebecca Dodele live in Santa Rosa. They met in college where she played soccer. Kobre’s brother is the PR director for the Triple AAA minor league Texas Rangers baseball team and his parents, Kim and Shaw Kobre, are huge fans who are already making plans to attend Windsor Games.
“Mom will be at a lot of the games and she’ll be whistling, so watch out,” he said with a laugh.
