Hello Sonoma County Families and Community:
We are reaching out to you today to address the terrible news from Montgomery High School, that a student died following an altercation and stabbing in a classroom.
First, our hearts go out to the victims, their family and friends and our colleagues at Montgomery and Santa Rosa City Schools. We can only imagine their heartbreak, and extend our deepest sympathies for this terrible loss.
When something like this happens, school leaders can’t help but look to our own students and school communities and think of them. The possibility of this kind of incident keeps all school administrators awake at night, and we work tirelessly to prevent it. Around the county, programs and initiatives are being pursued to help support the social emotional health and well-being of all students and keep them safe in school.
Our teachers in Sonoma County are dedicated to their students and their well-being, and knowing this terrible event happened in a classroom must add to the concern and sorrow they are feeling. With all they do to care for students, we know the fears an event like this must raise, and we send them our support and appreciation for all they do.
Know that all of Sonoma County’s school districts stand ready to support the Montgomery High and Santa Rosa City Schools community, with whatever resources we can. We superintendents also look forward to convening, as a group of colleagues devoted to student success and safety, to discuss ways to keep our students safe and thriving.
In the coming days and weeks, we will have many opportunities to make sure our students’ needs are being met. But for now, we should all hold the Montgomery High School community in our hearts as they work through their grief.
